Employment

Hotel and leisure experience

From hotels to sports organisations, large multinationals to start-ups, I’ve advised on all aspects of employment law, both contentious and non-contentious. Naturally, the hotel and leisure industry requires specialist skills and knowledge, but in the end I believe it all comes down to understanding people – their aspirations, the pressures they face, and the context of their business.

Recent work

I’ve worked in particular with a large luxury 5-star London hotel for a year or two now, drafting policies and procedures and dealing with numerous employment issues, including claims of unfair dismissal and discrimination, disciplinary matters through to reorganisation of departments, changes to the gratuities system, and changes to sick pay and bonus schemes. Other work in this area includes acting in court proceedings regarding a dispute over a restaurant's tips, tronc and the minimum wage.

Why should clients choose you?

In a nutshell: pragmatic, commercial advice. I know that my colleagues will be saying this too, but it really is what this firm stands for and ultimately what sets us apart. What’s great about the Hotel & Leisure Group is that we’re able to apply this pragmatic, commercial approach right across the board.

Challenges to meet

Talking to clients, the same questions keep cropping up. How do we differentiate ourselves and secure customer loyalty in such a competitive market? And yet how do we ensure that everyone in our organisation is working together to achieve these objectives? Cracking these conundrums remains the key to success.

Dream destination

Italy wins it for me. I can imagine nothing better in the world than sitting in a square, sipping a large espresso and watching the world go by. Don’t even get me started on the food.

The place to stay

The cheapest hotel in Bellagio, Italy, with a bed, a sink, a balcony and a view overlooking the rooftops down to the lake. Pleasure pure and simple.
