Corporate Tax

Hotel and leisure experience

Since qualification in 1996, I’ve provided advice on all aspects of taxation (both UK and international) to many businesses in this sector, from boutique hotels and major chains to restaurants, sports centres and theatres, as well as an online gambling company. I’m currently advising a major London-based tourist hotel group on the disposal of its non-core business assets.

Recent work

As well as acting for a prestigious Middle East-based hotel group in relation to the structure of its UK staffing arrangements, I’ve just advised a world-renowned theatre company on the casting arrangements of its ensemble productions. This was an exciting piece of work because it involved an opaque area of employment tax law. In particular, it was critical for our client (and the actors in question) to ensure that the UK employment tax rules did not apply to the casting arrangements. As a result of our advice, our client was able to preserve the self-employment status of the actors.

Why should clients choose you?

We provide a full tax service dedicated to adding value to the business of our clients. Whether our clients are buying, selling, employing, investing or merely looking to make savings in their day-to-day business, we strive to deliver the most efficient strategy. Our advice is always relevant and feasible, and is always in line with our clients' commercial objectives.

Challenges to meet

From my perspective, the biggest challenge undoubtedly has been the frequent changes to UK tax law over the last 10 years or so, which has often created a climate of uncertainty. This is particularly true in relation to VAT and employment tax issues. Another major challenge has been the increased regulatory burden of tax compliance.

Dream destination

I’ve been lucky enough to visit many beautiful places at home and abroad, but London remains my favourite place. Even though I live here, nothing can match the thriving arts scene, fantastic restaurants and sheer vibrancy of the city.

The place to stay

The Governors Camp in the Masai Mara Game Reserve of Kenya – an oasis of luxury amidst the teeming wildlife of the African savannah.
